I have been thinking a lot lately about the economy and the markets. People will come up to me and ask "Is your phone ringing off the hook"? "Are your clients extremely worried about the market"? My response to both is NO.
When you have a strategy and you stick to your plan, there isn't a great deal of need to overreact. If you don't have a plan or strategy, then there could be some issues. This doesn't mean that folks are content with the way the economy, government, or future looks and are walking blindly. There is time to take action and make changes to your plans...I AGREE. My Question (and somewhat answer) today is
WHAT CAUSES PEOPLE TO NOT TAKE ANY ACTION ON THEIR FUTURE?
We are in the middle of a pretty scary time, the signs are all around us. WE have the government stepping in on a $700 billion bailout, AIG, WAMU, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae needing assistance, the rest of the world slipping as well, and we are not sure where to turn. Is fear that overriding?
It is my belief that we are in the middle of the greatest economic opportunity ever. The chances we will have to better our lives is more evident in down economies than is rising ones. We seek out new ways to invest money, new ways to make money, turn to our friends and family for support, trust in support groups, want to be involved in our communities, and look to the Higher Power, God or Yahweh (whatever your belief)to carry us through. WE need those support groups and definitely need our Higher Power, but don't use that as a crutch to make yourself feel better. Use the support as a resource to believe in yourself and take action!!
Now is the time to move forward
Now is the time to develop new financial and business muscles
Now is the time to realize YOU will succeed much faster with support
Now is the time to lean into your faith
I am excited about the future and the times that are upon us. I look forward to helping anyway I can, please share your thoughts and let others know how you can help. We feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to be of service, have the clients we do, and appreciate each and everyone of you!

Sept. 23, 2008- How to Deal With Changing Environments
WOW.....What a week so far. It has been a little crazy to say the least.
The Government now owns a majority stake in AIG, the lending giants of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, and is now discussing a way to save the financial markets. Does anyone else think this is a litte crazy? I certainly do. What is the government doing getting involved in financial markets? Where does it end? Why aren't they helping you and me...the small guys?
Well at the sake of not venting too much, I want to share a few thoughts with you:
1. If you are wondering what is going to happen in the future you are not alone. Now is the time to make sure your planning is set for tax efficiency for sure. THE GOOD NEWS is we have only had 2 phone calls. My clients are diversified with the bulk of their money in safe investments. Safe investments will probably be the way to go in the near future.
2. Tax efficiency is going to be one key component going forward. The government is greatly underfunded as it is, now they are going to bail out banks. Hasn't this happened once before? (savings and loan). They are proposing similiar scenarios for our current environment. The impact on the average tax payer is projected to be somewhere around $20,000.
3. There will be great opportunities in the future. Yes, it sounds bleak, but there are more millionaires made in a down market that a good economy. One of which is owning your own business. One place to seek out your own business with a small start up costs is a direct selling company. One I like is Mona Vie.

There are many good opportunities out there. IF you have a good suggestions please post your thoughts here.
THE QUESTION: How long do you think the economy is going to struggle??
Please share your thoughts!

Does Paying Attention REALLY Matter?
YOU BET IT DOES.....here is why. I got this clip as part of a newsletter from one of the groups I used to work with...Read on!
The growth in bank loans has turned negative to a halt since March. The overall debt burden in the US economy is currently at record levels, raising concerns that a recession, if it occurs, could set off a sharp downward spiral. Household debt is now 131% of disposable income, compared with 93% at the top of the dot com bubble, 79% in the property boom of the late 1980’s, and 62% at the end of the 1970’s.” Shrinking money supply has historically been very bad for the economy. This is surprising information with our real negative interest rate.
In another piece of interesting “news”, Reuters reported that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) might have to borrow money from the Treasury Department due to bank failures. The last time the FDIC had borrowed funds from the Treasury was at nearly the tail end of the savings and loan crisis in the early 1990’s. For those of you who do not feel that inflation is the greatest tax we pay when the treasury does not have the money from tax dollars to give the FDIC, the fed will create money out of nothing, decreasing our purchasing power and increasing inflation.
Time for a Review? Make sure you are doing the best you can with your finances.

Taking Action on Opportunities...When is enough INFORMATION enough to make Decision?
Making “big” Decisions can sometimes be difficult. WE discussed this recently on the Livin The Dream Radio show, www.mydreambiz.net. A few key steps came from that discussion:
1. First of all, Determine what you want to achieve. What is the ideal outcome?
2. There is an abundance of information available today, don’t become too bogged down!
3. Cover the RISKS. If it is a situation that can be covered with insurance...Get it. This will
free your mind as well.
4. Seek out the advice of a trusted advisor to share your idea with. Preferably a person in the field you are seeking expertise. Don’t ask a mechanic financial or love questions, ask the mechanic about your car, mower, boat, etc.
Have Faith. Everything happens for a reason. God is in control, let the Power of the Universe lead You!
What are the Key Issues that bog you down when making a decision??
Please let us know your thoughts.
Have a great day,
John

Navin Family / Financial Designs Updates 7/08
Navin’s “Gossip” Notes
The Navin Family is doing well, energized by the pig roast, and happy to have all members back in the United States.
Lets begin with the worldwide travelers—Tracy and Julia. They had a great time traveling Italy, Greece and Paris. Their favorite had to be parts of Italy and Greece. The history and sights were just phenomenal. Enjoying the city of Rome (they actually were there and saw the Pope and President Bush), lots of laughs, good pictures, but also lots of garbage. Tracy (being a bit of a “germ-a-phobe”) said there was one stop where she would not get off the bus, too much trash piled high in the street. I guess the mafia controls the trash pick up and there was some issue between them and the government. Anyhow, it was all good besides that.
They really enjoyed the outskirts of Rome and Greece. Great people, enjoying life and their food. Tracy and Julia even jumped off a cliff into the Mediterranean Sea (that’s her to the left)! Paris was good, but after being gone 14 days they found it busy, noisy and missed the United States. We are definitely glad to have them home!
WHILE they were out, Kailey and I enjoyed some great time together. The first week Kailey was involved in a camp in Leipers Fork called Kids On Stage. A great week in which they interact with musicians, song writers, artists, computer graphics, etc. They actually wrote songs with song writers who produced some extremely popular songs. At the end of the week they (all the kids in the camp, 200) put on a concert. They run the lights, sound, set up, music, and the performance. They actually sang the songs they worked on all week. Amazing the talent of these kids, their hard work and dedication produced a great evening!
The second week Kailey and I spent 4-5 days in Sanibel Island, FL. Great for both of us to get away. We rented bikes, walked the beach, rented a scooter, ate lots of ice cream and laid on the beach. It was some great Dad and Daughter time. I am thankful to be a part of her life!
THE PIG ROAST……What an enjoyable afternoon! We feel truly blessed and are certainly grateful for so many wonderful clients!! The event contained fun events—many played miniature golf in which the competition was fierce. Where I didn’t think there would much competition, but definitely was, was in the bib decorating contest. We had some really creative and artistic entries in the event!! Some of the winners were The Neuman family…from Estelle down to the grandkids, all have tremendous artistic talent! Then there is the infamous (famous to those who know and love him) Bob Howicz who decorated a great bib with Green Dollar Signs all over it, had to recognize that talent!
The kids also joined in with coloring, decorating, and water gun fights. The pig arrived, what a sight to see - 130 lbs. roasting in a long spit. The taste was truly amazing. Thank you also to the wonderful chefs we have in our presence…many compliments on all the great food!! Once again thank you to you! WE appreciate you, and the opportunity to help you reach your dreams. We are looking forward to our Fall/Winter event.
Please let us know if we can help in any way! WE appreciate you, your referrals, and your energy!

P.S. If you have a moment this week drop Gina a note, email, phone call. Her 30th birthday is July 27! I appreciate all she does and I’m sure you do too!!
Gina’s Notes
Well, I was given specific instructions not to change the P.S. listed above so the “cat’s out of the bag!” At the end of the month I turn 30 and to celebrate appropriately, I will be headed to Vegas! So many of you have told me that 30 was your best year so I should embrace it – this sounds great but are you telling me that it’s all downhill from here – hah! Hopefully I’ll have some funny stories and pictures for the next newsletter when I return – I’m not looking for any “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” stories! I will be out of the office July 24th through the 28th (and although I may be in the office on the 29th, I may be a little slow)!
On a triathlon note, I decided against my July race. After talking with a tri veteran, I learned that the race director of this month’s race isn’t so great and I wouldn’t be missing anything! Chicago’s tri is right around the corner and continues to give me GREAT motivation (which I apparently need right now). For those of you that missed the information on the air date for the Vegas race I did, it is July 26th on NBC from 2:30 to 3:30 CST. Between now and my birthday, I have a 45 mile bike ride planned with my mom in Dekalb on the 20th. She is NOT a competitive rider and I’m looking forward to just enjoying the ride and the afternoon with her. It could take us a long time to get finished but sometimes it’s the journey – not the destination – that really counts.
On a Financial Designs note, I absolutely LOVED the pig roast and the afternoon with all of you! Although the weather was predicted to be nasty, it held off beautifully and the sun actually came out at the very end. As John said above, we were thrilled with the participation in the bib contest and the mini-golf. So many of you got good golf scores (sorry Shirley about the mishap of me adding 10 points to your score)! We are looking forward to our next event and will let you know what we’re thinking as soon as we figure it out!
Have a great summer and enjoy the weather – it appears to have finally arrived in Chicagoland! As always, if you need anything, you know where to find us!

The Direction of the Market???
With the recent and shocking news of the collapse of Bear Stearns, one of the largest financial institutions in the country, we are once again reminded that no matter the size of a company, everything can be lost. From a peak price of $171.52 per share in January 2007, Bear Stearns managed to lose 98.8% of its peak market value of $20.2 billion in less than 15 months – selling at $2 per share!!!
So what should we take from the news of Bear Stearns collapse?
Make sure you have a balanced approach to your portfolio! Take your age from 100, that is the portion you want into growth investements, the rest (or your age) should be in safe investments. Please log onto www.johnnavin.com with any questions or thoughts. With your risky investments, please make sure you are difversified. Don't put all your money into company stock, or the company 401k plan, spread out your risk.
Hope you all had a great Easter and look forward to our next conversation.
